Project 52: Playing with Light in Black and White (4)

Today’s post is for Project 52, a weekly blog project that I am working on with several other talented photographers whom I’ve come to know and adore over the past year. In this project, we concentrate on light and spend several weeks exploring an overarching theme.  We are currently playing with light in black and white, concentrating on taking an image that we intend to convert to black and white even before we’ve hit the shutter button.

In today’s B&W image, I was relying on black and white less for it’s ability to bring out subtle shadowing in a portrait, and more because a monotone can reduce distraction from my subject – the world reflected in my daughter’s eye.  Our recent travels have meant that a series of loved ones have surrounded her, and then quickly left her again – quite a lot for a three year old girl to handle.  She has loved running around with her best friend James today, but has come to check in with me a couple times, including at this moment.  I hope that I provide a constant for her in the madness of our travel.

Project 52: Playing with Light in Black and White

Today’s post is for Project 52, a weekly blog project that I am working on with several other talented photographers whom I’ve come to know and adore over the past year.  In this project, we concentrate on light and spend several weeks exploring an overarching theme.  Today we begin a new theme: Playing with Light in Black and White.

Before I caught the photography bug, I hadn’t thought much about what makes a good black and white image – neither what is involved in the process of converting from color to black and white (it’s usually more than clicking a button!) nor how to decide which type of image will convert well in the first place.  Sometimes I will decide to change an image to black and white after the fact, for a variety of reasons, but this month we are looking for light that will suit a black and white image well, so that we make the determination before we even click the shutter.  At this time of year in the Pacific Northwest, ideal light for b&w is not always the easiest to find.  The light we typically have all winter – the light that is produced by cloudy, foggy, overcast skies – is generally very flat and that typically doesn’t make for a great black and white image.  Sigh.  Luckily, the first morning light that reaches into my bedroom has been just gorgeous – soft and directional, a photographer’s dream – and I was able to take advantage.

This past week has officially been no fun, with Avery getting sick first and Alexa following soon behind.  And although it’s been cold outside, it’s also been bright and sunny (a rarity in Seattle in the winter), so staying inside has left this mama feeling cooped up and a wee bit stir crazy.  Our time has been spent watching princess movie after princess movie, and taking baths.  Here are a couple pictures of my cuties modeling their hooded towels, still very adorable even when they’re feeling under the weather.  The photo of Avery was taken using my new Lensbaby (a novelty lens that has a small area of focus surrounded by blur) – I can’t wait to get to play with that one outside!

I love using window light as a source for my images, so I am looking forward to that this month.  Earlier this week, I shot some pictures of my girls as they were waking up for the day (some are posted below).  I was thrilled to get a number of images that I liked, but this one of Alexa is my favorite.  She manages to look like a teeny tiny version of a hungover rock star, like a mini Keith Richards or something.  It just kills me.

Project 52: Special Holiday Edition (5)

Today’s post is for Project 52, a weekly blog project that I am working on with several other talented photographers whom I’ve come to know over the past year.  In this project, we concentrate on light and spend several weeks exploring an overarching theme.  For the next four weeks we are taking a break from exploring classical light themes and instead focusing on the beautiful lights that celebrate the holiday season.

This photo of my girls was the one I used for our holiday card this year.  This is one of those photos that is all about the moment.  The way that they have been interacting lately has just been wonderful.  Seeing them play together, seeing their relationship develop, is just amazing.  And you can see that, in this moment, where they are holding hands and loving one another.  I will admit that the photographer in me wishes that I could fix a number of technical issues here, but the mom in me couldn’t be happier – with them or with the image.

For this week’s post, I must confess that I am being entirely indecisive and posting two images.  I think this time of year just results in my being more of an “and” person.   As in, I will not decide if I should have a snickerdoodle OR a sugar cookie – I will have a snickerdoodle AND a sugar cookie.  This also explains why all the nooks and crannies of my house are stuffed full of presents for my girls.  Oops!  The first image was taken during the “blue hour” – the first hour after sunset when the sky is that gorgeous cobalt color that I love.  The second image is of Avery from the Salish Lodge at Snoqualmie Falls, where we had brunch with my parents who are in town for Christmas.  Their beautiful Christmas decorations are almost as lovely as their waffles!
