Project 52: Playing with Artificial Light

Today’s post is for Project 52, a weekly blog project that I am working on with several other talented photographers whom I’ve come to know and adore over the past year. In this project, we concentrate on light and spend several weeks exploring an overarching theme. Today we begin a new theme: Playing with Artificial Light.

My first post is from a sunrise shoot that I did on Saturday morning with some local photographers.  This image was taken before the sun rose, where you can see that artificial lights can be quite beautiful.  Indeed, the artificial lights were much prettier than the natural ones that morning, since the Seattle sunrise mostly involved the sky going from deep blue to dark gray to light gray.  Sigh.  I suppose I will have to try again in the summer.    KAC_2013_03_02_0002

Please continue along our creative blog circle to see what my lovely friend Jessie Wixon has posted.  Jessie lives in NYC and takes absolutely stunning photos of her gorgeous family.  Please click HERE to see Jessie’s first play on artificial light.

And if you are interested, here are a few more shots from the sunrise in Seattle.  The first was taken with a super wide-angle lens, and the last with a Lensbaby:

Goofing around at home

I rented the extremely wide, extremely fun 14-24/2.8 lens this weekend.  This shot was taken when Avery insisted on a bit of reading after a bath.

And this one is Alexa in a giraffe hat.  The distortion of this lens makes for a pretty cartoonishly fun portrait!

Pike Place Market

On Thursday morning, I got to do a little grocery shopping at one of my favorite Seattle places.  Even though Pike Place Market is a bit of a tourist trap, I absolutely love it.  And I am thrilled that I am once again able to eat a tomato that truly tastes like a tomato!  KAC_2013_02_28_0052

Owls at the Arboretum

On Wednesday, the girls and I went to the Arboretum to participate in a program about Owls.  We didn’t get to see any actual live owls, but we had plenty of fun wandering around the park.  Alexa was happy not to be the very last one on the walk.

Avery convinced Teacher Sarah and all the kids to play a version of hide and seek that involved pretending to be a lion and roaring when you find someone.  I am not really sure of the rules, but the kids enjoyed it.

Finally, though we didn’t get to see any live owls, one mom did discover the remains of what one owl had coughed up after his dinner.  Sorry little mousie.KAC_2013_02_27_0026

At the cafe

On our first day back in Seattle, Alexa was my breakfast date after we dropped Avery off at school.  We ran a couple errands and then had crepes, with coffee for me and juice for her.  She’s been much more chatty and interactive lately, but all in the sweetest way possible.  Really, she’s just the best and is an absolute pleasure to be around.  She walked around the cafe for a bit, flirting with a few men and giving everyone a huge smile.    KAC_2013_02_26_030956/365
