P52.2: Who We Become (52)

It’s been a full year of Who We Become (though I actually have to catch up on a few posts that I missed – shhhh!), and we are looking back at the year and choosing a favorite image.  I have posted a few contenders below, but you will have to click HERE to see the post on Who We Become to find out which one was my very favorite.   😉  Thank you for visiting!  KAC_2014_09_07_0162

P52.2: Who We Become (49)

I’ve been slacking on my Who We Become posts, but I am trying to get back to them and catch up on the ones I have missed.  I picked a tricky but exciting week to return to, however, as we are exploring multiple exposures!  The last time I did a double exposure, it was because I was shooting on film and I screwed up and forgot to forward the roll.  I have known for some time that my digital camera was capable of doing this, but I’d never looked into it.  I think that I will need to play with this some more – it was a lot of fun, but definitely different, and I am not sure that my photo is a total success.  I am getting a kick out of my little wild thing, though!  Please click HERE to visit Who We Become and see everyone’s double exposure image.

P52.2: Who We Become (43)

We are working on layering this week on Who We Become.  Layering involves using foreground and background, in addition to your subject, to tell your story.  My images for this week come from our visit with cousins on Whidbey Island.  The girls were playing on the beach, in and out of the water, and my cousin Martha and I were trying to capture some of their craziness, becoming part of the action at times ourselves.  It was very fun, and as with all good play, there was a touch of chaos that I think this technique allowed me to capture.  Please click HERE to visit Who We Become and see everyone’s layered images.

P52.2: Who We Become (42)

We are working on subject separation this week on Who We Become – that is, compositional elements used to distinguish the subject from the environment or background.  This week’s image is from a trip to the beach (aka Lake Washington) that the girls and I took earlier this week.  Alexa, with her sandy bum and banana in hand, just cracked me up.  Please click HERE to visit Who We Become and see everyone’s image for this week.

P52.2: Who We Become (41)

This week on Who We Become we are working on a technique called “Filling the Frame.”  This involves zooming in on our subject, even cropping out much of it, in order to focus on certain details.  This image of Giotto’s Campanile in Florence is from our recent trip to Italy.  The campanile, or bell tower, is located in the historic center of Florence, just next to the Duomo (Santa Maria del Fiore) and across from the Baptistry – all very beautiful and quite famous buildings.  Images trying to capture all these buildings together (like this one, for example) tend to lose all the details in the mass of marble and such.  By focusing on the single building, you become aware of details you might otherwise not notice.

P52.2: Who We Become (40)

This week on Who We Become we are focusing on depth of field.  Depth of field is the area of your photo that is in focus.  By keeping just your subject in focus, with the rest of the image out of focus, you direct the viewer’s eye where you would like it to go.  Here, the cow’s face is in focus and you can see the water dripping from it’s mouth, but the other cows and trees in the background are blurred so they do not detract from the subject.  Avery was very interested in petting a cow when we were in Switzerland, though the cows were not quite keen on this idea.  This cow is the one she got closest to, as you can see in the second image below.  😉  Please click HERE to see all the depth of field images over on Who We Become.

P52.2: Who We Become (39)

For our last week of portraiture, we are simply doing a photographer’s choice image.  This one was taken in Gruyere, Switzerland just outside the chocolate factory that we had toured.  We needed to burn off the sugar from our tasting, so Paul and the girls played a bit of tag.  You can see some of the beauty that surrounded us in the background; it is such a breathtaking place!  Please click HERE  to visit Who We Become and see everyone’s choice for this week.  KAC_2014_06_27_0221
